According to the Jere Beasley Report, the problem involving furniture falling on people, especially children, has been a major source of concern. Recently a study showed that the number of children injured or killed by a television set falling on them appears to have risen.
The Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio reviewed the data from ER visits and estimated that furniture related injuries occurred 14,700 times each year between 1990 and 2007. Almost half of those injuries resulted from a television set. It also is responsible for nearly 300 deaths.
The number and rate of injuries to children from falling furniture increased greatly over the time period of 1990-2007. A U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report also said that it had estimated 42,700 injuries and 180 deaths associated with furniture from 2000-2006, with 87 of those deaths involving television sets.
Parents should take special precautions when young children are present in the household. The Jere Beasley report suggests that parents anchor heavy television sets to the walls as well as any other heavy household furniture. Also, parents should avoid placing a remote, toy, or any object the child might try and grab on a television set or other pieces of heavy furniture.
