Heat Stroke Deaths Due To A Child Being Left In A Car
Here are some tips to keep kids safe in and around vehicles:
o Walk around and behind the vehicle before you move it o Know where your kids are; make your children move away from the vehicle to a place where they are in full view or you can have another adult watch your children while you move your car o Teach your children that "parked" vehicles may move, and let your children know that even though they can see the vehicle the driver might not be able to see them o Think about installing cross view mirrors, a rear view video camera, audible collision detectors, or some type of backup detection device o Measure the size of your blind zone area behind the vehicles you drive o Be aware that steep inclines, large SUVs, vans and trucks also add to the complexity of being able to seeing behind a vehicle o Teach your children to never ever play in, around, or behind a vehicle and also always set your emergency brake and keep your vehicle locked even if it is in the garage o Keep toys and other sports equipment off of the driveway o Homeowners should keep the landscaping around the driveway trimmed to make sure they can see the sidewalk o Keys or remote openers should never ever be left in the reach of children o Never leave your children alone in or around cars, not even for a minute o Have a visual reminder, for example you can keep a teddy bear in the car seat when it's empty, but put it upfront when your child is riding in their car seat o Make it a routine to put your handbag, wallet, cell phone or laptop on the floor of the backseat o Make it a habit to look in the backseat by opening the back door of your vehicle before locking the car and walking away o Arrange to have your daycare provider call you if your child has not been dropped off within 30 minutes of your usual drop off time o If you normally bring your child to daycare and your spouse takes the child instead, have them call you to confirm the child was safely dropped off at daycare o If you see a child alone inside a vehicle, call 911 right away! Do not wait; a few minutes can be the difference between life and death o When a child is missing immediately check all vehicles and car trunks o Be particularly careful about keeping children safe in and around cars during busy times, schedule changes and times of crisis or during holidays o Use drive-thru services when they are available at restaurants, banks, pharmacies, drycleaners or anywhere else o Use your debit or credit card to pay for your gas at the pump
