Between 1998 and 2010 there were more than 494 deaths caused by hyperthermia when a child has been reported as being left in a hot vehicle. On average every year 36 children die from hyperthermia after being left unattended in a vehicle. A child's body does not have the same internal temperature control as an adult's, and can warm three to five times faster. Heatstroke occurs when the body's core temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit, and a body core temperature of 107 degrees Fahrenheit is usually fatal. In the daytime, within 10 minutes of the vehicle being the closed the inside temperature will be almost 20 degrees hotter than the outside temperature, and after 30 minutes the inside temperature will be 34 degrees hotter.
