We wanted to inform our readers that a Hazmat team was called to a Toledo day care on Thursday for exposure to mercury. More than one dozen children and 5 adults were treated outside the day care center.
The incident happened off of Ryan Road, in South Toledo, when a blood pressure cuff being used in a "show and tell" demonstration broke, releasing a tablespoon of mercury into the building.
Mercury is a toxic chemical if inhaled or ingested. Although it was not a large amount it was enough to cause concern especially around children. Prolonged exposure can cause nausea, migraines, and dizziness with more serious side effects being nervous system damage, memory loss, and kidney failure.
