Recently, a recall of about 635,000 cribs that were sold in stores such as Sears, Wal-Mart or K-mart was issued after the death of a six-month-old Iowa child who was trapped and then strangled after the drop side of the crib broke. Twenty different models of the Dorel Asia cribs were recalled because the drop sides of the cribs can detach, which creates a space in which a child could be suffocated, strangled, or trapped. The cribs were also recalled because it was found that a child could become trapped if one of the slats is damaged or broken. According to a Jere Beasley report, the company has received 31 reports of incidents involving drop side cribs. Six of those incidents involved a child being trapped between the drop side and the mattress. They have also received 36 reports of broken slats, including two reports of children being trapped.
